REGISTER OF DEEDS OFFICE

REGISTRAR:  Nellie Brockhoff

DEPUTY:  Dawn Newman

Office Phone:  785.742.3741                   Fax:  785.742.7705

The office is open for business from 8am to 4:30pm, but open for research to 5pm Monday through Friday except for approved holidays.

The Register of Deeds office records many documents related to real estate in Brown County.  Deeds, Mortgage, Releases, Oil and Gas, Assignments, Plats, Surveys in addition to many miscellaneous documents such as Military Discharges, Cemetery Deeds, Federal and State Tax Liens and Power of Attorney just to name a few.  We also take Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filings for the County.

We maintain an up-to-date set of indexes which show the ownership of land in the entire county.  It is important to maintain this ownership information because it is then passed onto the Appraiser’s office where they assess the value of the property and the buildings on the property.  With assessment added to the ownership information it is then passed onto the County Clerk and Treasurer’s offices where they generate the tax statements mailed each year.

The recording fees for the Register of Deeds office are set by state statute which generates a sizable income for the county.  This income is deposited into the county general fund and administered by the Board of County Commissioners.

The records in my office start in 1857 so we have over 100 years of information in our office which is open to the public during regular business hours.

We’re also a popular office among Genealogists.  We have people come in to search our records for their ancestors frequently.  Quite often if their ancestors owned land in Brown County they will be able to find additional family information from our records and locate where they lived in the county.
